Dinosaurs are a diverse group of reptiles that first appeared in the Triassic period, they became the dominant species through the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods and it wasn't till the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event that led to the extinction of most dinosaur groups 66 million years ago.

Fossil record indicates birds today are evolved modern feathered dinosaurs from theropod ancestors during the Jurassic period.
